Trevor Burrowes The houses look so alike. Is that an akee tree between them? Maybe breadfruit trees in the background. Same pink color and smooth texture masonry on ground floor as in Mark's family office. Unusual push out window style to the right. The building style is rather unusual. The road engineering is magnificent. Had to be, I guess. The whole of SAB is at a 45 degree slant that must funnel loads of rain water downhill!

Trevor Burrowes I knew it from the '40s when it was called "Doubloon" (sp), owned by the Arscott (sp) family. It was a watering hole then too. The Shell gas station was then owned by the Phillips family, who had an old house just above it, shrouded in all manner of trees.

GROUP PURPOSE
St. Ann's Bay is central to the history of Jamaica. It is a mile or so from Sevilla Nueva, the first Spanish capital, built c. 1500. It had handsome British Colonial (mostly 19th cent.) buildings that have not been preserved. It has come upon hard times economically. A promising sign is a planned new Marcus Garvey center focusing on the childhood of Jamaica's first national hero, who was born and raised there.
The hope for this group is to focus on the central t...

Restoring St Anns Bay sounds like a mammoth task, as evolution has changed its face to what it is now, With the Departure of the British in 1962 a new wave of thought entered in to the running of St Anns Bay. I Forsee that it might be virtually impossible to do so as the new residence there might just like it the way it is, However we can all write in and tell your stories which hopefully will motivate them to clean up and preserve the important buildings and Historical sig...

ST ANN'S BAY COURTHOUSE
St. Ann's Bay, the capital of St. Ann parish is best known as Jamaica's first capital city which Christopher Columbus established as Seville, in 1494.
Today, a visit to St. Ann's Bay is a step back in time as it's dotted with many historic sites that are preserved. Among these sites, the St. Ann's Bay Courthouse stands prominently in the town.
Prior to its construction in 1860, the courthouse and parish church shared the same building, symbolizing a close alliance between the plantocracy and the established church. This alliance manifested in the creation of the infamous Colonial Church Union in the 1830s which was committed to the persecution of dissenting missionairies in the parish such as the Baptists and the Methodists. The hope for this group is to focus on the central town of St. Ann's Bay, with readers contributing memories, thoughts, anecdotes, photos, etc.. It would be welcome to hear about people who live or lived there, including seeing photos of them and/or their homes. A major purpose of the group is to share ideas on how to preserve what is left of the town's colonial heritage.
Courtesy and civility will be appreciated.
With abundant thanks to Vintage Jamaica and its administrator for making this page possible! I haven't figured out why my name is so prominently displayed with the cover photo (although the drawing is mine).
